Texas singer and songwriter Jimmie Dale Gilmore has just released Come On Back, in honor of Gilmore's late father, the guitarist Brian Gilmore. The younger Gilmore's music is a striking melange of country, folk and rock.
Gilmore says the songs on his new album reflect his deepest roots, formed as he was raised in Lubbock, Texas. Several were made famous by songs by Slim Willett, Hank Williams and the Carter Family. "I sure didn't toss out my Lefty Frizzell records when I discovered the Beatles, he said.
A return to his roots is merely the latest curve in Gilmore's unpredictable career arc. Early attempts to begin a recording career -- in the Flatlanders, with childhood friend Joe Ely -- fell by the wayside, and Gilmore left music to explore his spiritual side in the 1970s.
But 1998's Fair and Square announced his return to music, and after his solo career was established, Gilmore again worked with Ely and the Flatlanders, on the records Now Again (2002) and Wheels of Fortune (2004).
