For several years now, I have been talking with Missouri Symphony Orchestra Maestro Kirk Trevor and KBIAGeneral Manager about a show that I felt we needed to be broadcasting. The challenge was that we had to create the program first.
Each summer, the Missouri Symphony Orchestra brings highly skilled musicians to Columbia for a 17-week series called Hot Summer Nights. If you see any of these shows, you know that the talent is top-drawer, the settings are diverse, and the crowds are generally a wide range of ages. This latter reality is somewhat unique at classical audiences where patrons trend grayer.
Maestro Trevor liked the idea for the show enough that he found the resources to record the entire 2015 series. I worked with him and his sound engineer Rob Boullion to produce a program that should be a memorable audio postcard from last summer's series and a preview of the 2016 Hot Summer Nights series.
On tonight's inaugural episode, we'll hear from Maetro Trevor talking about the series and the orchestra. On the program tonight is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's 'Serenade No. 11 in E-flat for Winds', Hector Berlioz 'Roman Carnival Overture' and Richard Strauss 'Death and Transfiguration'.
Join Classical 90.5 each Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m. through the end of May for the Missouri Symphony Orchestra Radio Hour.
